Keep It Youth Centered

Coach's Commentary

How Do You Put Youth at the Center?

Great projects engage youth from the outset.  Start by putting youth interests, ideas, concerns and skills at the center:

  • Plan activities such as brainstorming and youth-led surveys to actively elicit youth voices in developing driving questions and projects.
  • Engage youth and cultivate leadership in setting goals, objectives, schedules, budgets and events. Allow youth to lead planning sessions.
  • Explicitly teach children and youth how to brainstorm ideas, express themselves, plan activities, work in groups or committees, and manage their time.
  • Train staff to take different roles for different age groups when facilitating independent project-based learning.
