Deepen Your Understanding

Not all students who are struggling readers look the same or sound the same and not all reading difficulties should be addressed in the same way. Identifying the area of difficulty can be key to helping a student, but isn’t always an easy or simple thing to do.

One of the best tools at your disposal in a 21st CCLC program is correspondence with the students’ teachers. The school should be able to identify struggling readers and provide information on the areas of need. However, this is not always possible. In the next section, we provide suggestions for identifying and supporting students that should be helpful whether you do or don’t have any information about them from their school setting.

Remember to think about the stages of reading acquisition and the five key components for teaching reading as you explore this section.
