Working With Families in Rural Areas — Strategies

FIchpt 4p4

There are several strategies 21st CCLC programs can use to promote family engagement in rural communities:

  • Position your program site as a central meeting place for community groups.
  • Engage with family members when you see them at the store, church or other locations in the community.
  • Set up phone trees or a listserv to contact families informally.
  • Conduct home visits to hard-to-reach families.
  • Partner with community and faith-based organizations and other government agencies to extend services.
  • Be creative about messaging to be sure you communicate to all families. Take advantage of technology such as social media or texting to spread the word and communicate regularly.
