Working With Culturally Diverse Families — Strategies

FIchpt 4p6

There are many strategies your program can use to make culturally diverse families feel more welcome, such as these:

  • Hold cultural competence trainings for your staff, and make this a regular topic for discussion at staff meetings.
  • Create a newcomer's guide for students and parents who speak limited English.
  • Organize fun activities and games where students and staff can learn at least a few words in other languages. Even being able to say "hello" to non-English speaking parents can go a long way! And remember: A smile is the same in any language.
  • When planning family nights, try to incorporate the cultures of all parents in the theme. For example, include multiple ethnic traditions in holidays, sports or music nights.
