Do’s and Don’ts for a Welcoming Environment

Creating a welcoming environment takes effort. Get your whole staff on board so that families feel connected to at least one staff member. When families are not involved, they may feel unwelcome.

This video starts by showing what an out-of-school time program does to make families not feel welcome. You may be surprised to see how small actions can have a lasting impact on families. The later part of the video shows what a program can do to make families feel welcome.

Reflect on This

Think about your program as if you were a parent or family member. How welcome would you feel? Think about how to make parents at ease and record your thoughts in My Notebook.
